Mom Was Right

By Sherri Sacconaghi, Posted February 28th, 2011

Last weekend I took a Zumba class with a friend. We had a great time. After class she was dragging and she uttered the four little words I dread, “I didn’t eat breakfast. “ I’m amazed at how we continuously charge our iphones, feed our pets every morning, and fill our cars with gas. So why do we run out of the house without a thought of what is fueling our bodies.

I hear many reasons why people do not eat a healthy breakfast. They are in a rush, they are not hungry, or they are “saving” calories for later in the day, but mom was right on this one, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In fact, breakfast should make up about a third of our daily calories. When it comes to living a healthy life, this is a big one.

Statistics show that people who eat a good breakfast are more apt to lose or maintain a healthy weight. And as an added bonus you will have more energy, maintain mental alertness, and be more patient and level headed throughout your day. So if you have kids a boss or a computer, this last one is reason enough.

I love breakfast. I look forward to it. I realize that some of you are not hungry when you first wake up but unless you are headed back to bed, I encourage you to eat something. An orange and string cheese or a piece of whole wheat toast with nut butter would do the trick. Those are great for those in a time crunch.

If you are looking to fuel up for the day, here are my favorites:

  • Greek Yogurt with fruit and granola and/or nuts

  • Oatmeal with nut butter and a banana.

  • Egg White omelet with spinach and avocado. Piece of Whole Wheat Toast

  • Smoothie made with Berries, banana, coconut almond or soy milk (add some spinach for an extra boost without a bitter taste.)

A healthy breakfast includes a carbohydrate such as fruit or a whole grain (no, chocolate glazed donuts do not count) paired with a protein such as eggs or yogurt.

This week take the breakfast challenge. Try two new breakfast options. Is there a breakfast combo that makes you feel great? I’d like to hear about it. Good, now go forth and conquer your day.
